Matthew Stafford says he had fun 'stealing souls' in Rams' big playoff win over Buccaneers

Matthew Stafford is here to win rings — and snatch souls.

The Rams QB came through in the clutch on Sunday, hitting Cooper Kupp with a late bomb to put the Rams in position to notch the game-winning field goal. The pass came soon after the Buccaneers tied the game late and storming back from a 27-3 deficit.

In his post-game press conference, the typically cool-headed Stafford turned cold-blooded instead, and said that following the spike, teammates told him he went to a "dark place" when returning to the sideline, and that he was glad that officials didn't flag him for putting a little gusto on the spike.

Stafford's post-game chat was pretty milquetoast, as you'd expect from the winning sideline. Well, bland except one quote that was pretty telling of how good that felt for passer, who is advancing to his first NFC championship game.

Man, I was enjoying the moment. In my mind, I live for those kinda moments. I would have loved to been taking a knee up three scores. But it's a whole lot more fun when you gotta make a play like that to win the game, and just steal somebody's soul. That's what it feels like sometimes, when they're sitting there like, "Man, we just made this great comeback." And you get to reach in there and take it from them. That's a whole lotta fun.

Stafford was never really offered opportunities with the Lions like he had been on Sunday. In fact, with the win, Stafford now has more playoff wins in 2022 than the Lions have since 1960: He played in just three playoff games with the Lions, all losses, in 2012, 2015 and 2017.

Now, Stafford is playing in his third playoff game with the Rams next weekend — and has an opportunity to snatch more souls.
