A major breach of security has been reported at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Reports obtained by Naija News on Tuesday (today), revealed that some thieves ransacked an Arik Air aircraft, a Boeing 737-73V with registration number EI-ULN and stole valuable materials.
Details made available to SaharaReporters in an exclusive interview alleged that the assailants carted away the Flight Management Computer, one of the major subsystems of the Flight Management System, during the operation.
Naija News understands that FMS which is one of the major parts stolen is worth hundreds of thousands of United States dollars.
The computer system according to experts is an onboard multi-purpose navigation, performance and aircraft operations computer designed to provide virtual data and operational harmony between closed and open elements associated with a flight from pre-engine start and take-off, to landing and engine shutdown.
Reports confirmed that the thieves had operated in the airport between the hour of 11:00 pm on Wednesday night through 7:00 am on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the Domestic Terminal II.
A further revelation about the incident confirmed that the thieves also tampered with the pilot static cover and other sensitive parts of the aircraft, making it impossible for the aircraft to be flown.
The publication quoted aviation experts as saying that the security breach and removal of the useful parts of the plane could have only been carried out by persons with aircraft technical skills.
“It is impossible for a novice to have successfully removed the FMC, that thing was stolen by an expert,” one aviation source said.
Naija News understands that this is not the first time breach of security is being reported at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and the recurrence is beginning to raise the eyebrows of citizens and major stakeholders in the sector.
