ISLAMABAD: Tens of 1000’s of Islamists at a protest camp in Pakistan’s capital are awaiting a deadline set by their chief calling for the prime minister to resign.
Firebrand cleric Maulana Fazlur Rehman led a caravan of supporters to Islamabad final week in a bid to stress Imran Khan to step down, calling him an “illegitimate” ruler.
Rehman has hinted he may direct his partisans to march on the seat of Pakistan’s authorities and pressure Khan’s resignation. Khan says he has no plans of quitting.
Pakistani authorities additional strengthened safety across the camp within the lead-up to Sunday evening’s deadline. That features partitions of delivery containers blocking roads main into and out of the protest space, in addition to deploying riot police and paramilitary forces.
