In an interview on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co., Gibson, pastor of His Church, a megachurch with locations in Owensboro, Kentucky, and Amarillo, Texas, has dubbed his reopening effort —which will employ social distancing and follow safety guidelines —“Peaceably Gather Sunday.”
“When COVID-19 came out, we were willing to do all we could to keep our congregation safe,” he stated.
But he stated as companies deemed important have been allowed to reopen, “the church was told we couldn’t.”
“The messaging is powerful; Business can do issues however the church can’t,” he lamented.
“So my question is why is the one hour on Sunday the most deadly hour in America?” he requested. “Why is the hour demonized while [big box stores] do this every day of the week and the church is the bad guy.”
According to Gibson, the web effort has gathered the help of 50 different church buildings to this point, however predicts “thousands” will comply with — and warns closing church buildings might have political penalties at gubernatorial election time.
“Thousands of churches across America are coming online and they’re gonna open their doors,” he declared. “We’re not going to let our our governors tell us we’re nonessential and I believe in the next election cycle some of those governors may be told that they are nonessential.”
